This course is a part of the Basic Studies in Social Sciences.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students are familiar with the often-hidden societal and cultural mechanisms that shape and regulate everyone’s individual lives in certain structural circumstances. The students have adopted critical views in reflecting their everyday environments and social networks. They also have become familiar with sociological theories and research concerning the topic.
Course develops the following generic skills: critical thinking, interaction and communication
Content
The course deals with the question of social order: How societies, communities and their social orders are maintained, strengthened, and challenged by individual or collective agents? How societies and communities are lived as “true” by people, and how societal change is possible? The course introduces social scientific theories and studies addressing these questions.

Modes of study
The course is a self-study online course in the Moodle learning environment. Online course include lecture recordings and/or written materials. Based on the literature, various written assignments are given.
