The University of Eastern Finland has maintained its position among the world’s top 200–300 universities in the THE Impact Rankings 2025.
The University of Eastern Finland again performed well in the international sustainability comparison. In the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, the university retained its overall position among the top 200–300 universities globally.
More than 2,300 universities from around the world participated in the ranking. The University of Eastern Finland excelled particularly in the category of Climate Action, where it ranked 22nd globally – making it the highest-ranked Finnish university in this category. In addition to Climate Action, the university was also ranked among the top 100–200 globally in the categories of Life on Land and Responsible Consumption and Production.
“Each year, more and more universities participate in the ranking. This year, there were nearly 400 more participants than last year. The competition is getting tougher, and the differences in scores at the top are very small,” notes Maiju Eskelinen, Sustainable Development Specialist at the University of Eastern Finland.
The THE Impact Ranking is an international ranking assessing how successful higher education institutions are in promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. There are a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and each higher education institution is scored on the basis of four SDGs.
In the overall ranking, the University of Eastern Finland ranked third best among Finnish universities. LUT University was the best out of Finnish universities, while the University of Helsinki was ranked second best.
